You have two variables and only one equation. You will not be able to come up with an absolute value of a, only a relative one. 2a + 3b = 8 2a = -3b + 8 a = (-3b + 8) / 2 That is as far as we can go, unless you have another way of determining the value of b.

a and b are variables ... they may have any value so long as they make the math sentence true. .. . ex ... If a = 1 and b = 2 then -- 2(1) + 3(2) = 2 + 6 = 8 ... those values make the statement true so those are possible values of a and b .... but if you change the value of one, that causes the change of the other to make it true again ... ex ... if a = 4 then b cannot = 2 2(4) + 3(2) = 8 + 6 = 14, obviously NOT 8, so not true b must change to b = 0 ... now 2(4) + 3(0) = 8 + 0 = 8 ... now true so changing one value also changes the other value =======================================... solving the equation for a ... a = (8 - 3b)/2 <<<<< maybe this is what you need.

There isn't such a thing as "the value" for a linear equation in two variables (a, b). So, stop asking idiotic questions that don't make any sense. You don't even know what you are talking about.
