Most of what is now the US SouthWest, including Arizona, was conquered from Mexico. So, you are utterly wrong.

I was educated in southern Arizona, and learned state history in grade school. At no time did the Arizona territory extend that far south, at least not as taught in Arizona public schools. It was part of the New Mexico Territory, its southernmost parts still in Mexico (see this map: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:New_M... until Arizona was ceded to the United States in the mid-1800s, including the southern portion that had been part of Mexico--and came nowhere near any body of water. Arizona became a state with its borders as you see them now in 1912.

Better to ask "how much of the United States is actually Mexico?" You may recall that the US acquired Texas (including territory in what is now other states) by the move for Texas independence in 1836. The Gadsden Purchase (made so that the railroads could have a southern route across what would become Arizona) was made in 1854. California became independent from Mexico and joined the US in 1850. Significantly then, over 1/4 of the US was formerly part of Mexico.

An amendment by Jefferson Davis giving the U.S. most of Tamaulipas and Nuevo León, all of Coahuila and a large part of Chihuahua was supported by both senators from Texas (Sam Houston and Thomas Jefferson Rusk), and others. But, the amendment was defeated 44–11.

You should take note that the borders of the USA have changed several times in the short history (less than 250 years) of that country. As indeed have the borders of many countries changed in the last 250 years, or in the last 30 years for some countries. Note that the Spanish holdings in the Americas, including the part which became Mexico, were established before parts of the east coast of North America became settled by British and other northern European settlers - parts which eventually became the 13 colonies which started the USA with a very small area of North America - much of the part which was not in the hands of the British was in the hands of France and Spain at that time. So, for the USA and other countries, borders have ended up where they are today as a result of conflict or (sometimes dubious) political deals. The border between Canada and the USA in Alaska was settled only in 1903.
