Is it possible or typical to take a break from college to work and not be able to find a job?

Possible? Sure. But it's probably that you'll be able to find one, as long as you're not picky about the sort of job you'll take (grocery stocking and checkout, fast food, etc.), and willing to work for minimum wage.

It's tougher in today's market, but not impossible. It also depends on what sort of job you are looking for. If you want to start at the bottom, then it'll be easier. Higher-paying jobs will be more competitive and those with degrees + experience will get chosen first.
