What have you tried? This is pretty basic stuff. You are given a list of ingredients you could buy at a store and how much they cost to make a spaghetti dinner for four people. You are first asked to find the price per person. So add up the prices and divide by 4 since this is for 4 people: (1.59 + 1.89 + 3.49 + 2.89 + 0.35 + 0.79) / 4 11 / 4 $2.75 per person You are given the prince per-person at a restaurant to be $7.95 per person. Which is more expensive? The restaurant, of course. What percentage? To find the percent increase, subtract the original price from the new price and divide by the original price, so: (7.95 - 2.75) / 2.75 5.2 / 2.75 1.8909 So it's an increase of 189.1% (rounding to 1DP)

I am making the assumption that the list of ingredients is all you need to feed the 4 people at home. Then the total cost of the meal is the sum of the prices. 1.59 + 1.89 + 3.49 + 2.89 + 0.35 + 0.79 = 11.00 Eating at home costs $11.00 for four people.** Divide the total price by the number of people, to find the "price per person" $11.00 / 4 = $2.75 The same serving at the restaurant is $7.95 (this information is given). Which one is more expensive? (Fancy way of saying: "Which one costs more"). $7.95 is a higher cost than $2.75 A "percentage" is just a fancy way of writing a fraction over 100. 25% is the same as 25/100 They mean EXACTLY the same thing. Here, you need to find the value of "how much more" is the cost $7.95 - $2.75 = $5.20 (this is "how much more" the restaurant meal will cost you) and compare this with the base price ($2.75) as a fraction 5.20 / 2.75 multiply above and below by 100 (this gets rid of the decimals without changing the ratio) 520/275 we are trying to reach a fraction where the bottom is 100 divide above and below by 2.75 (275 / 2.75 = 100) (520 / 2.75 = 189.090909... which I will round to 189.1) 520 / 275 = 189.1 /100 = 189.1% (remember: the symbol % means exactly the same as "/100") --- **The problem with this kind of question is that it does not represent "real life". There are many costs that are not shown: electricity for the stove, the cleaning of the dishes (more electricity, lights, etc.) and, more importantly, the time taken (I value my time at a dollar a minute and the preparation of this meal, plus washing the dishes, would take a total of at least 20 minutes. Therefore, paying $7.95 at the restaurant (for $2.75 of food) is not that much of a difference, if I avoid working for 20 minutes AND get to enjoy chatting with my friends while someone else cooks the food.

Raymond is right. The problem also does not address extra costs associated with eating out. Does $7.95 include tax and tip? It does not include the cost of driving to the restaurant (about 50¢ per miles when all costs, including depreciation are included).
