What does over compensate mean?

My friend asked me if I over compensate? She was talking about reading into punctuation. Example: Thanks. Anyone feel like that person is angry when they use periods alot like: I am okay. I don't know. OK.

Over compensating is when you realise you lack something so you show off something you do have a little too much. I dont really think it applies to your grammar there. When your angry and use short sentences its because your emotions make it difficult to articulate. She might think that you do this to hide that your angry? Youre using more punctuation because your senteces are shorter and it doesnt have much to do with over compensation

It means going beyond the norm or being extreme.

I don't know what you mean about using periods a lot. You are supposed to put a period at the end of each sentence. Many people don't when they are texting because it's more work. But that develops bad habits. You have to remember to use the commas and periods when you're writing things other than text messages.

I get angry when idiots don't know that "alot" isn't a word.

I would not call it overcompensation, I would call it overthinking, worrying about details that do not matter as much as you fear that they might. Overcompensation is usually used to describe doing a thing to excess to draw attention away from the fact that you are bad at another thing, or did something wrong and are working too hard to make up for that mistake.

Note tat the word "alot" does not exist. You mean "a lot" - two words. There is a verb "to allot" (note spelling), meaning setting something aside for somebody.
