Raider reminds me of the football team. Ryder seems like "rider". My friend has a son named Ryder, and she pronounces it the same as "rider".

Of course not. Raider comes from the word which means one who raids. Ryder is just misspelled Rider, one who rides. Raiding and riding are nowhere near the same thing. Vocabulary practice time.
