Is it unusual for my doctor to refer me to a surgeon with out a consult?

When I asked for one she said the doctor will consult on the day of surgery. I have questions and can not reach the doctor!

That's standard procedure. You'll have an opportunity to ask whatever questions you have when the surgeon meets you.

In the USA this would be unusual.

No, not for minor things, and they can always call your doc. The nurse can answer this too, and yes, you should always get a ride home. Things scar, that is unavoidable, it can be revised later.
