Why do people and animals look horrendous if you don’t bury them?

I once saw a bird missing an eye. There were a bunch of ants on it so the eyes was probably eaten by ants. Last month I saw a rabbit missing an eye, but it had died from falling into one of those underground things out the window of a basement so its eye couldn’t have been eaten.
