Could we breed a species of ape to the point of human intelligence?

if we bred only the smartest chimpanzees or orangutans in captivity, would they reach the point of human intelligence? if so, how many generations would it take? do you think they would be treated as equals in society?

Some of them are already smarter than many humans I know.

No. You could breed a very intelligent chimpanzee (our closest animal cousin), but it would still just be a chimpanzee. It took hundreds of thousands of years for humans to evolve into Cro-Magnons (the earliest humans).

No. Their brains are not large enough. It would be a pointless exercise. We already have humans with intelligence levels comparable to the apes.
