Shelves are still attached. When they break free they're icebergs.

yes, but they don't consist of frozen seawater. they consist of (compressed) snow. If you melt them you can drink it

They are glaciers that hang off land like Antarctica. They do stick out into the ocean and there is nothing underneath them but water.
