Why is it dangerous to swim in a pool when it is lightning? What is the physics of this situation?

Water conducts electricity, but it doesn't attract it. If it did happen to hit the water, it would take the shortest path to the ground - straight down. Why would your chance of being hit by lightning be greater if you were in water?
