Why do doctors sometimes use a CAT scan instead of an MRI?

    They have different pluses and minuses as do x-rays.

    They have different applications, safety and costs. CT scans use x-rays to image bone etc. MRI are more effective at showing organs and soft tissue.

    Different tests are better in different situations. Too many to list. CAT scans are frequently done with a contrast medium.
