A steel drum has volume 0.23 m3 and mass 16 kg. Will it float in water when filled with (a) water or (b) gasoline (density 860 kg/m3)?

(1000 - 860) * .23 = 32.2 kg - Mass of steel 16 kg gives a buoyancy of 16.2 kg while the steel drum floats.

A 230 liter drum is an odd size. As long as the total weight is less than 230 kg, it should float. Just a question of how high (how much sticks up and out of the water). A cubic meter of water has a mass of one metric tonne (1000 kg).
