Can anyone figure this out?

I think of a number and add 2. I square the result then take away three times the number I first thought of. If my answer is 60 what was the original number?

(x + 2)^2 - 3x = 60 x^2 + x - 56 = 0 (x + 8)(x - 7) = 0 The number you thought of is 7.
