I think so yes -- both my father and brother graduated from " top colleges " and while neither used their degrees for ALL post-graduation jobs prestige associated with having gone to such a school definitely made a difference.

It depends on how you define "pay off", and the relative cost to each person. It may be "worth it" to one person (based on their finances and their chosen major), but not "worth it" to another person.
