How is it that some people can die from gun shot wounds days later at the hospital?

Couple of years ago, a kid was shot in the leg at a school mass shooting. He died two days later. Tupac died 6 days after he was shot 4 times. Why is it that you can survive days after being shot and under treatment at the hospital and still die?

Too much damage..they may be able to keep you alive with surgery and blood transfusions and treatments but the injuries are too severe.

There are a variety of reasons -- maybe you go septic, maybe the damage brings about cascading organ failure, maybe you were brain dead and it took them that long to decide to determine that or to decide to pull the plug.
